1. Understanding culture
Reiter
"Culture" is a term that is used very often - in everyday life, in the media, often in politics, as well as in the humanities and social sciences. It is very difficult to grasp and ambiguous. The interpretation of 'culture' has changed, just as the world has changed and continues to change through processes such as increasing global networking and mobility. Among the great diversity of cultural concepts, which of them captures these contemporary developments?
What awaits you in this learning sequence: You will get to know and understand an expanded, open concept of culture. An understanding of culture in the sense of modern cultural studies will be introduced. This understanding of culture is like a pair of glasses through which cultural influences can be perceived, grasped and appropriately addressed in the first place. It is therefore the basis for intercultural reflection in the context of university and studies.
You learn:
- to know and distinguish between different levels of meaning of culture,
- to describe "culture" as a multi-layered construct using various models,
- to summarize the characteristics of "culture",
- how culture shapes you and all people,
- what else, in addition to "culture", influences people and their perception, behavior and actions.
